They say you learn something new every day!
Just recently I met a wonderful old man with a most colourful and heroic tale to tell…
Picture the scene … it’s 1945, you’re in Albinea in occupied northern Italy … of all the sights that you witness I would hazard a guess that an SAS parachutist floating down above your head playing the bagpipes is probably the last thing you’d expect to see … but that is the story of local man David Kirkpatrick.
German law at the time decreed that for every German soldier killed by a resistance fighter, ten civilians would be killed so the SAS were parachuted into the village and Mr Kirkpatrick played his bagpipes to make the occupying forces think that is was a British Forces attack when they made up only a very small proportion of the numbers. Operation Tombola was a success and the full story is recorded by local newspaper the Carrrick Gazette.
… and for those wondering, yes, he was wearing his kilt in the traditional Scottish fashion as any other way was forbidden!!
